Race Car Driver David Levine Plans Emotional Visit To Lurie Children’s Hospital
Race car driver David Levine will spend time visiting with young patients at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago on June 18, 2015 starting at 1 pm. This will be his first visit, as an adult, to the hospital where his own open heart surgery was performed when he was an infant.
David was born with a ventricular septal defect, and had open heart surgery when he was just four months old. His surgery was performed in 1993, by a talented team of surgeons at the hospital’s former Lincoln Park location. One of the surgeons, Dr. Backer, is still working at the hospital today.
“Children’s Hospital of Chicago has amazingly talented surgeons, and the work that Dr. Backer and all of the doctors and surgeons do there has a profound impact on the lives of thousands of families every year,” David recently reflected. “I am only able to go back and visit the hospital now, as a recent college graduate and a professional race car driver, because of their long-standing dedication to providing superior pediatric cardiology care.”
A competitor in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards, the Highland Park, IL native is competing at his home-town Chicagoland Speedway track on June 20th. Currently in his first full-year of ARCA Racing stock car competition, David leads the series Rookie Challenge standing, and is currently ranked fifth in the overall series national driver points standings.
Whenever he can on race weekends, David visits area hospitals, wearing his full driver’s suit, to visit with children and share autographed racing photos and stories. “It is very important to me to share my personal heart story, not only to raise awareness about congenital heart defects, but also to let my racing fans know just how important living a healthy lifestyle is at any age,” says Levine.
