It was a cloudy and cool day at Motor Mile Speedway in Virginia on Tuesday when Lira Motorsports unloaded four composite body ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards Ford Fusions to test in preparation for the 2016 racing season. After the track was dried from an overnight rain shower, four up-and-coming young drivers each had a considerable amount of time behind the wheel on the banked, four-tenths mile oval.
Twenty-year old racers Brandon Lynn and Jairo Avila, along with 16-year-old Clayton Weatherman and 15-year-old Tyler Dippel, were the primary drivers at the test. Also on hand for guidance and to help shake down the cars were 2015 ARCA Racing Series SCOTT Rookie Challenge points leader Kyle Weatherman, the highest finishing rookie in the 2015 points standings David Levine, and Michael Lira, who has assumed a driver recruitment and development role for the team since mid-Summer.
Multiple set-ups and adjustments were made throughout the day, and all four drivers worked on both long and short runs. At the end of the day, the drivers were all running similar lap times.
After the test, Avila, who was one of a handful of drivers selected to participate in NASCAR’s Driver for Diversity Combine last month, summed up the sentiment of all four drivers. “We had a lot of fun today, and learned a lot about this car that will help us next year. I can’t enough everyone enough who made this journey possible. Thank you especially to Carlos Lira and Lira Motorsports for their hard work today.”
